Trip to Saumur: 28 June - 4 July 2021

As we were unable to travel Saumur this year we are wondering if we could do something similar next year. This paper gives an outline of what we might do and we hope, at this stage, that you might give us an indication of whether or not, in principle, this is something you would like to be involved in. Please let us know by 31 July! If we get a positive response from enough of you we will go ahead with the preparations and ask you to make a firmer commitment in the form of a deposit before the end of the year. We hope that this will provide you with the sort of flexibility which we need as we emerge from pandemic restrictions.

We expect to travel to Portsmouth (about 2 hours) arriving in time for an evening meal before boarding the overnight ferry to Ouistreham/Caen. After we have arrived in France we will stop for breakfast and then continue to Saumur (about 3 hours) arriving in time for lunch. We will return the same way travelling during the day, leaving Saumur after breakfast and getting back to Warwick late in the day.

We have booked rooms at the three star Hotel Le Londres in the town centre ( Please note that this is a hotel of character with no lift though there are some ground floor rooms.

We expect there to be plenty of opportunities for making music. We hope to perform in a number of retirement homes as well as singing flash-mob style in suitable locations! We may even be invited to sing in the Town Hall. We envisage visits to Château Brézé (with its underground château), mushroom caves, troglodyte dwellings and to Ackerman’s wine cellars.

The cost is likely to be similar to this year’s proposed trip, about £1,000 a head. This would cover ferry (apart from overnight accommodation), coach travel throughout the trip, three star bed and breakfast accommodation in a twin or double room at Le Londres, evening meals in Portsmouth and at different restaurants in the centre of Saumur, as well as entrance fees.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you have any special, including dietary, needs. There are no lifts at the hotel and although all rooms are en suite only some rooms have baths.

Marian and I, like many of you, were very disappointed that this year’s trip couldn't happen, like so many other things, but we remain very confident that this could be a lovely trip and hope to share it with you. If you want to see the movie of our trip to Saumur in 2013 (as well as other trips to France and elsewhere), you can find this here (scroll to the bottom of the page). If you have any questions please ask!

And please let us know what you think by the end of the month.
